Be Beautiful and Save Green

gasl_green_beauty01Beauty may only be skin deep, but most females spend a lot of money to achieve it.  But we don’t need to.

Creams and cleaners, moisturerizers and scrubs, skin softners and foot soaks, the list goes on and on.  I’m not suggesting you give up any of these, I’m saying look at other products that do the same thing.

During winter we all fight dry skin and hair.  A deep conditioner for your hair can cost big bucks.  Try full fat mayo for the same effect.  That’s right, take several large spoonfuls of mayo, work it into the hair and cover with a shower cap for at least 30 minutes and wash out.  For dry skin use olive oil after your shower.

Foot and body soaks feel so good and leave your skin so soft.  Use baking soda and epsom salt for the same feeling for just pennies.

If you use a face or body scrub try mixing olive oil, sugar and coffee grounds and scrub as normal.

Saving money doesn’t have to mean going without your beauty routine.  Shop in your kitchen to find products that can do double duty for a fraction of the cost.

Save Green and Clean

42-15556081Baking soda, vinegar, fresh lemon and hot water.  With these simple items you can clean almost anything in your house for just pennies.  You also wouldn’t be exposing yourself and anyone else at home to some really nasty smells and fumes.

There are a slew of websites you can search for some exact cleaning tips but here are a few general tips.

Make a paste out of baking soda and water to clean just about any surface in the bathroom and kitchen.  Rub the paste on the surface, rinse off with water and your done.

Throw out any glass cleaner you have and replace it with vinegar.  Use the vinegar  just like glass cleaner.

You really don’t need anything but hot water to clean all types of flooring.  The hot water gets all the dirt off and you don’t have to worry about not getting all the cleaning stuff off the floor if you have pets or small children.

Use a fresh cut lemon to remove stains from many surfaces.  And you get a true fresh lemon smell, not an artifical kind of lemon smell.

Beauty care challenge

Humans are vain and it is costing us millions of dollars each year and dumping tons of chemicals and their by-products in our environment.  So here is the challenge.  Don’t buy any more beauty products.

Before you get all upset and think I’m I complete nut, go check out the bathroom cabinet.  Okay, you probably have enough stuff in there right now to last at least a year.  How did I know?  Because me and my 20 something daughter did this same challenge about a year and a half ago.  Between us, except for shampoo, we had about one years worth of stuff.  And just like you we didn’t buy all of it.  A lot of it was well meaning gifts.  We made a pack to either use it, or if it was still sealed to give it away.  Homeless shelters and military packages are always in need of personal care items.

Now that the cabinets are cleaner we use more “old fashioned” beauty aids.  Things like oatmeal, olive oil, baking soda, coffee grounds, sugar, epsom salt, mayonnaise, and lemons.  You can give yourself a complete fancy spa treatment using nothing but the items I’ve listed above.  Our grandmothers and every generation before them did just that.

There are a lot of natural items on the market now, but the “natural” label is questionable at best and more expensive than other products.  We don’t need expensive, chemical laden products.  We just need the common sense and know how of our grandmothers.

Saving green

I hear a lot of people say that being green is too expensive.  I found that generally just the opposite is true.

Check out the price of just your cleaning supplies.  You probably paid around $3 for each bottle.  Now look at the price of your baking soda and vinegar.  Did you know that you can clean almost anything with baking soda and vinegar.

Buying second hand clothes is being green and almost always less expensive especially if you have children.  Some of my favorite pieces have come from second hand stores.

Planning your errands saves gas and time.  I try to stop at stores that I drive by on the way home from work and not back track to them on the weekend.

These are just three examples of how being green can save you green.  This list could go on for about forever but I am betting that you are smart enough to come up with at least ten more of your own ways to be green and save green.
