Green, Garden, or Hedge

herbalremediesWhat do the three names, green, garden and hedge all have in common?  Give up?  They are three names for the same kind of witch.  The kind of witch that I am.  I prefer garden witch myself.

So what is a garden witch?  One that gets most of their magic from their gardens and the rest of nature.  Some say we use our magic to help or gardens grow.

But is it magic, or just forgotten wisdom?  Some of both I think.  Garden witches use the wisdom passed down to them from past generations.  We know the power of plants, roots and herbs to heal the mind, body and soul.

Most of the magic is being able to stay true to our knowledge.  We know when to shut out the modern world and rely on what mother nature has provided all with, peace and beauty beyond imagination.

That’s too sad

writing_pull2About a week and a half ago I read a blog survey asking the question “Would you blog if it cost?”  The amount was a penny a word and from the comments I read the answer was a resounding no.  With  further explanations of what the people had to say wasn’t important enough to pay for it.

To me, that’s too sad for two reasons.

One, are people just blogging for the sake of blogging?  Are they on purpose just adding to the junk already floating around the Internet.

Two, do people really think what they have to say (or write) isn’t worth paying, that it doesn’t have meaning and importance to friends, family or anyone?

I admit, in the past I have been guilty of blogging just for the sake of blogging.  So, I’m going to tone it down and back a little.  I’ll blog less, and try to make sure what I  have to say has some substance.  Maybe not for everyone out there, but for people that think like me and have some of the same values.

How did we get here???

When was the last time you wrote a letter or sent a card with more than your named signed?  For most of the human population it’s probably been a while.  Yet we sit here day after day and night after night sending our most intimate thoughts to strangers.  So I ask how did we get here???

And I offer a challenge.  Right now put down the lap top or push away from the desk top and write a letter to Grandma, or mom, or old aunt Hazel or your best friend from high school.stationaryroundup2wr  That’s correct, I said write a letter.  Not post a blog, send a text or even make a phone call.  Trust me the receiver of the letter will appreciate it more than any “send to all” email or text.

How do I know?  I have a grandma in assisted living.  My last living grandparent and I send her a letter about every month.  She has 9 grandchildren and god only knows how many great grandchildren that can write, but I’m the only one that sends card and letters on a regular basis.

How do I know, my aunt told me so.  She also told me that she keeps them out for a couple of weeks and re-reads them often.  It made me glad to know that.  It also pissed me off that I’m the only one that does it.

So move away from the computer, pick up a pen and make somebodies day.

GAME TIME

dollar-signThis should be every bodies new favorite game, how many free or cheap things can you name?

Any category, the field is wide open.

I’ll get you started with some of my favorites.

450px-clothes_line_with_pegs_nearbyDrying clothes on a clothes line.  Not only free, but a childhood memory.

Vinegar instead of laundry rinse.  A cheap solution with a bonus, it actually helps clean the washing machine and water lines.

The Dollar Movie Theater.   Yes they are still out there.

Free city services.  Many cities offer free services at least one day a year.  They range from the dump to parking to the rec center to the zoo.

books02-619x685And the mother load of free and cheap is the library.  They have way more to offer than just books.  How about the latest issue of major magazines.  Or newspapers.  Not just local either.  Internet access and other computer applications like Word and Excel.  And DVD movies.  And the customer service is usually excellent.

Now that I got you started, how many free and cheap things can you name???

Just Curious

Since cold and flu season is still in full bloom, I was just curious if anyone has a favorite way of staying healthy and keeping the germs away.fluman

There are several things that I do that I swear by for keeping the bugs away.

First is sleep and plenty of it.

Second is supplements.  I take vitamin D and immune builders a couple of times a week.

Third, let the stress go.  This is harder than getting enough sleep but very necessary.

Exercise in the garden

on-gardening-2Don’t think gardening is exercise?  Check out the picture.  I’d rather be doing my leg squats outside in the sunshine instead of in some smelly old gym any day of the week.

My own garden prep work is well under way and it is a workout.  Raking, shoveling, bending and lifting not to mention the cardio.  But I get a lot more than just an in shape body out of it.

I get a nice looking yard.  I get some very good vegetables.  I get flowers to brighten up my desk at work and my home.

I get much needed time alone but also time to talk with the neighbors.

I get a daughter that will finally eat a tomato, not straight out of the garden, she still hates those, but she loves them when I dry them for winter storage.

I get to see the wonder of something growing.

Yea, I get a lot more out of exercising in the garden than just some nice looking legs.

Why do we do that?

img_1Someone sneezes, we say “bless you”

When you yawn, you cover your mouth.  Why?  It’s not just good manners.

Why do we “spring clean” our homes, why not summer or fall clean?  Don’t know.  You do it because your mother did it, but why did she do it.

Superstition.   The spring cleaning one is actually a Jewish superstition that says it is bad luck to thoroughly clean a home after the month of May.

There are dozens of little things that we do each day that can be traced back to a superstition.

So whats the difference between tradition and superstition?  Luck or avoiding bad luck and since some of these superstitions are very old, pleasing the gods.

I had a one very superstitious grandmother and a great grandmother that was both a mid wife and preparer of the dead.  I grew up with a lot of superstitions.  It’s kind of fun really not to mention it wins a lot of bar trivia.

Sticking with it

organic20produceI must say I’m proud of my husband.  So far he’s doing pretty good sticking with his new food plan.  I will not call it a diet because I hate that word.  The first three letters, die, not good and it just has a bad rep.  I prefer using food for life plan.

I’m not sure when we last ate red meat.  It’s pretty over rated really.  We had some wonderful fish today with mandarin oranges and avocados.  Yesterday we had roasted egg plant with a metatrainian type salad and quinoa, an ancient grain.

He is also watching his portion sizes and eating more small meals instead of one big meal a day.  These are all good things and make good sense.  I’m glad he is going about trying to lose weight in a smart way.

Family Hereditary

mtf_family_tree_staticWe all inherit more from our parents and grandparents than our eye color and height and general medical history.  Most of us fondly say we have some family traditions.  We think the traditions are limited to  the type of stuffing at Thanksgiving and if we eat hamburgers or hot dogs on the 4th of July.

But the fact is our family hereditary goes way beyond these things.  What religion you consider yourself to be is probably based on your family hereditary.  Racism and political affilation are also highly effected by your family hereditary.

So, in other words most of us act certain ways, do certain things and think certain ways because our parents and grandparents and on and on did it that way.

So I’ll issue a challenge.  Do you really like that stuffing, no, then stop eating it.  Do you really like that church and understand what they stand for, no, then either find out or get out.  In other words, think for yourself.  Go beyond “because it’s always been that way” and really find out who you are and what you think.

What’s in a Dream

weather-seasons-moon_sleepingI used to never remember any of my dreams.  As I began to explore more about the metaphysical world that changed.  Over the last couple of years I have had many dreams that I have been able to hold onto after waking.

Some of that is due to making an effort to remember and some of it is just being more open to the dreams and their meanings.

Finding the meaning of dreams can be quit the challenge.  There is general help available from many books and websites, but who knows the answers for sure.  Usually I don’t worry the meaning until I’ve had the same type of dream several times.

Recently I’ve been dreaming about family and houses, linked together in the same dream many times.  What it all meant I had no idea.  So I did some research today.

Since all the family interaction (parents, grandparents and cousins) are positive it seems to mean nurturing and protection.  I’ve always been close to my family, so I agree with the research.

The houses are homes I’ve never lived in but the places themselves are inviting.  The houses look normal but they have rooms that can expand and bathrooms behind sliding closet doors.  Some of them have long passage’s.

According to my research to seems that I could perhaps be on the verge of something new or some changes in my life.

There have been some changes in my life lately.  Most of them at work.  But there are also some changes going on at my own house, minor kitchen remodeling and a lot of cleaning out of some old junk.

So are the dreams and waking life related?  Who knows for sure.  Dreams are still one of the unknown human mysteries.
