It’s Monday morning at about 8:30am and I’m still in my PJ’s drinking coffee instead of being at work.
This is great!!! I have not had three days off in a row since the first part of November. And it’s even better since I’m on call on the weekends.
Not only is today great, but all weekend was. Knowing I had the extra day, I didn’t go through Saturday and Sunday in a whirlwind trying to get everything done. I enjoyed a much slower pace.
And there is nothing that I have to do today. There is a lot I can pick to do, but for now I’m just enjoying my coffee, the snow falling outside and the thought of a full day of nothing in front of me.

What do the three names, green, garden and hedge all have in common? Give up? They are three names for the same kind of witch. The kind of witch that I am. I prefer garden witch myself.
So what is a garden witch? One that gets most of their magic from their gardens and the rest of nature. Some say we use our magic to help or gardens grow.
But is it magic, or just forgotten wisdom? Some of both I think. Garden witches use the wisdom passed down to them from past generations. We know the power of plants, roots and herbs to heal the mind, body and soul.
Most of the magic is being able to stay true to our knowledge. We know when to shut out the modern world and rely on what mother nature has provided all with, peace and beauty beyond imagination.

Since cold and flu season is still in full bloom, I was just curious if anyone has a favorite way of staying healthy and keeping the germs away.
There are several things that I do that I swear by for keeping the bugs away.
First is sleep and plenty of it.
Second is supplements. I take vitamin D and immune builders a couple of times a week.
Third, let the stress go. This is harder than getting enough sleep but very necessary.

I must say I’m proud of my husband. So far he’s doing pretty good sticking with his new food plan. I will not call it a diet because I hate that word. The first three letters, die, not good and it just has a bad rep. I prefer using food for life plan.
I’m not sure when we last ate red meat. It’s pretty over rated really. We had some wonderful fish today with mandarin oranges and avocados. Yesterday we had roasted egg plant with a metatrainian type salad and quinoa, an ancient grain.
He is also watching his portion sizes and eating more small meals instead of one big meal a day. These are all good things and make good sense. I’m glad he is going about trying to lose weight in a smart way.

I love sunshine and being outside. And now sunshine and the vitamin D it creates in our bodies is getting a lot of press.
I first read an article on the benefits of sunshine a little over a year ago in of all places my favorite magazine Mother Earth News. Now the articles are everywhere.
Getting the correct amount of vitamin D from the sun in the winter can be tricky if you live in colder climates. The supplement D3 does seem to work though.
This winter I given D3 a try. I live north of Denver and not only can it be too cold to be outside, but the sun itself is not strong enough to have full benefits.
My personal results have been pretty. So far, no colds (knock on wood) even when all those around me have been sneezing and coughing. I’ve been taking one supplement 3 times a week. When I’m able to be outside more I’ll back off on the supplements.
I’ve also upped my in take of fortified milk. I almost never drank milk until about 6 months ago. Since I’m not crazy about just drinking milk I eat about 4 bowls of cereal a week. I’ve also added yogurt to my diet about 4 days a weeks.
So now I have a reason to be outside, not that I needed one before. But instead of just soaking rays I’m also soaking up vitamin D.

What we eat matters just as much as how much we eat. That is really true in our home. My husband is over weight and has intestinal problems. I can certainly out eat him but he prefers things like large amounts red meat, cheddar cheese and sweets. He drinks only coffee all day long or a glass of whole milk. Not the best things to eat or drink.
We have slowly over the last few weeks been changing the diet. Lots more vegetables and some fruits, more fish and less meat. I’m still working on pushing the water and juices instead of coffee.
My husband has decided to do a 7 day cleanse program to help with his intestinal problems. I’m not fully on board with this, but at least he has done lots of research on the product. I have also pointed out that if he does the cleanse then he should make permanent changes to his diet.
The cleanse and diet will start this weekend. I’ll post more about it in the coming weeks.

I was web surfing the other day and found a rather distributing fact about American women’s height and weight. The average height is just under 5 foot 4 inches. The average weight is 163 pounds, up 11 pounds from just a few years ago.
Now I’m about right on for the average height. I know I’m a little on the thin side at 117 pounds, but I would have to gain 45 pounds to even be considered average. I can’t even image that.

Somethings I just don’t understand. Why do people eat a super sized burger and fry meal with a diet drink? Why do some people skip breakfast and lunch only to eat a 3000 calorie dinner one hour before bed? Why do some people never eat fish but take a hand full of fish oil pills each day?
A healthy body is all about a balanced lifestyle. As important as any modern medicine are three things that we can all control in our own lives, food, rest and exercise.
A balanced diet and proper portions are easy to achieve and will make you feel better in about a week. Getting enough sleep, which is about 7 hours for adults, will make you feel better by the next morning. Exercise is hard for a lot of us, but it doesn’t have to be. Take a walk at lunch or walk up and down the stairs a few extra times. Get a yoga mat and start doing leg lifts. Meet a friend for a swim. Just move more, you will feel better in no time.
Enjoying life is really about enjoying balance.

I just read another post about alternative medicine and supplements. The post listed the top 10 most popular supplements. It’s good info, as far as stats go, but what it didn’t say is that it is best to eat the actual food to get the same benefits of the supplements.
So why would we rather spend lots of money on supplements instead of changing our diet. There are many reasons, we don’t like the taste, we don’t want to eat at home, it takes more time to cook than it does to take a supplement, the list goes on. The only good reason to take a supplement instead of eating the correct food for the same benefit would be an allergy. In some cases if you have a food allergy you can take a supplement without having the same reaction.
The post listed ten supplements, I’ll look at the top two. The top supplement listed was multivitamins. I understand how multivitamins are supplements but they are hardly alternative medicine. Anyone schooled in alternative medicine would suggest eating a well balanced diet. If you truly eat well there is no need for a multivitamin.
Fish oil was the second supplement. In the past few months a couple of friends have been told by their traditional doctors to take fish oil. Again eating the actual fish has much more health benefits than taking the supplement. So why the supplement advise? They didn’t like fish and wouldn’t eat, even for better health.
One supplement that hasn’t made the list yet is vitamin D. In the past year there has been a lot of researching involving vitamin D’s health benefits and our lack of it. The only good source of D is sunlight. It is added to food like milk as a supplement. Since sunlight can be hard to come by in the winter, it might actually be worth considering added this supplement to your daily routine, at least for part of the year.

Who would have thought that yoga would be at the center of a wold wide debate. Malaya is the latest country to try and ban yoga from the Islamic community. Egypt as some similar bans in place and in the United States it is the Christan’s that are trying to keep yoga out of public school gym classes.
And apparently all because yoga has it’s roots in the Hindu religion and might bring someone closer to the Hindu gods.
I have to wonder if all these people wanting all these bans have ever practiced yoga. My bet is no they have not. I do and it’s wonderful exercise and a great way to relax. It’s low impact (I had my first knee surgery at 13), it can be done at home, and it doesn’t require a lot of special equipment or room. It’s also been recommended for both my husband and daughter by medical doctors.
After two and a half years of practicing yoga several times a week I feel great, and I have not converted to the Hindu religion. I do however feel more connected with my own spiritual center.
Fear of something is a funny thing, but I would have never thought that religious leaders world wide would fear yoga.
