There is no doubt about it, getting sick is expensive. Even the common cold can cost a couple of hundred dollars if you add up lost wages, a trip to the doctor and medicine. Sooner or later we all will catch something, but prevention really is the best cure.
We’ve all heard these things a hundred times, but they really do work so they are worth repeating. Eat right, get plenty of sleep, drink fluids, get some exercise and wash your hands.
Food is key to staying healthy. Eating right includes the types of food you eat and how and when you eat. Try and eat lots of fruits and vegetables and only a little meat. Eating fresh is better than eating processed food. Eat small amounts a few times day, think of it like grazing.
I’m a big fan of lots of sleep. I almost always get 8 hours a night. A rested body functions better and gets the down time needed to stay well.
What you drink is as important as what you eat. I enjoy a cup or two of tea a day. I have boxes and boxes of tea so I always have a good selection to pick from. I also keep juice in the refrigerator, usually cranberry or grape. Water is a simple and quick option. I try to avoid alcohol.
For exercise I do yoga 3 or 4 times a week. It’s also a get stress reliever. Pick an exercise that you enjoy and is easy to access.
Your mother was right, wash your hands often. I don’t use anti-bacterial soap and some studies show it doesn’t works any better than just plain old hot water.
During the winter when lots of people around me are sick I take an immune building supplement a couple of times of weeks. For most people that is enough to stay healthy. To many vitamins can be a bad thing.
Staying healthy is more than just luck, you do have to work at it, but the pay off is worth it.

I hate to admit it, but my mom was right. Yours probably was too. You need to eat your vegetables. You also need fruits, grains.dairy and protein.
Food is some of the most powerful medicine there is. If we eat the way we should, most of us could throw out our multivitamins. With a few exceptions food contains all the mineral and vitamins we need.
However, in the United States food is literally killing people. People are eating way to much food in general, to many sugars and not enough food in its natural state.
Mother Nature provides most food they way it was meant for us to eat it. Apples for example are perfect the way they are. We do not need to bake them with sugar and eat them with ice cream.
We also need to be concerned about how our food is grown and raised. Mother Nature did not intend for cows and chickens to be forced feed and kept in pens in which they can not even turn around. Nor did she mean for them to be pumped full of water, antibiotics and steroids.
There have been studies done that show that the eggs from a chicken that spends it’s day outside pecking around the barn yard contain more protein than chickens that are caged.
We now have corn and grains that are disease free and grow to a uniform size. They also have less vitamins and minerals.
We need to be less concerned with convenience and more concerned with healthy food. We need to be less concerned with price and more concerned about the living and growing conditions of the food we eat.
Think of it this way. No parent would allow a child to reach their hand into a jar of antibiotics and eat them. But we don’t think twice about feeding them food everyday that has been pumped full of antibiotics.

I read something the other day about green living and recycling that has me a little concerned. It seems that some people maybe having anxiety attacks because they are not green enough.
I certainly want everyone to be green, but I also want them to be healthy. It’s great if you put the plastic bottle or newspaper in the recycle bin, but it will be ok if it gets in the regular trash instead. It’s wonderful if everybody can compost their kitchen scrapes, but if the banana peel makes it into the garbage it will be all right. If your light bulbs are CFL it won’t be as bad if the light doesn’t get turned off. And remember it’s not worth it turn around when your a block from the grocery store because you for got your canvas bags.
To me a big part of being green is also being serene. If old habits slip into your life every now and then don’t worry to much about it and let go of the anxiety.
