Why do I have a Witches Calendar?

After a passing remark about my Witches Calendar last week I was asked why I had one.  My response was because I’m a witch.  Most people that have known me for a while realize this about me without having to be told.  To the casual observer it’s something that might never be noticed.mothernature

My nose is not long with warts on the end.  I don’t have a pointy black hat and a herd of cats following me.  I usually keep most of my beliefs to myself  and don’t share my rather unique knowledge openly.

Over time there are a few things that people begin to notice.  I am passionate about protecting and preserving Mother Earth.  I am an organic gardener, growing a lot of our food along with herbs and flowers.  I am not a true vegetarian, but I prefer fresh and raw over preserved and cooked.

I don’t have a lot of trust in western medicine.  For common alignments I relay on remedies passed down from my grandmothers.  Herbs are the base of these remedies.

Do these thing alone make me a witch?  Certainly not, it goes much deeper.  But like I said, I don’t share to openly all at once.  But I am not all that unique.  There are probably other witches that have crossed your path.

Journey Part 4 Alternative Medicine

herbalremediesNever fails, I make a list and leave something out.  If you’ve been following along with the journey then you will know that aalternative medicine was not on the original list.

Well it should have been.  Alternative medicine as always been a big part of my life.  My mother used to treat me with the remedies she learned her from grandmother.  I’ve taken that knowledge and added to it.

Mother nature has provided all the medicine that we will ever need.  It is all around us everyday, literary in nature.  Herbs are the most common medicine found in nature, but barks, roots and flowers are also used.  On some plants all the parts are used.  Mother Nature doesn’t like waste.

However natural treatments and remedies are not something to play around with.  Mother Nature also provides some on the most powerful poisons on earth.  Alternative medicine should only be practiced by someone that knows what they are doing.

Finding a person qualified in alternative medicine can be tricky.  Most states have no guidelines.  There are however numerous good books available on herbal medicine.  Most of them include basic remedies and will also list harmful herbs.

I believe that traditional medicine needs to embrace more of the alternative medicine ways.  There is room for both approaches in the treatment of humans and animals.

Beating a cold

Friday afternoon a cold hit me like a ton of bricks.  At 4:45pm I was fine.  At 5pm I know I was sick.

I was still at work and would be for a couple of hours.  All I wanted to do was sleep, but instead I rummaged through my food drawer in my desk and found some tea.  That helped with the sore throat until I could leave.

When I hit the door at home, the first thing I did was make another cup of tea, with lemon, honey and a splash of whiskey.

I did take some OTC cold medicine to help dry of the runny nose.  Traditional medicine isn’t my first choice, but I don’t refuse to take any either.

I slept 11 hours Friday night.  I slept off and on all day Saturday, in between cups of tea and things to eat.  I slept 10 hours Saturday night.

It is now Sunday morning and I feel almost normal.  No runny nose, no sore throat, no cold.  A 24 hour cold is a record for me.  Is it the herbs I take to help the immune system, was it the yoga that I do regularly, was it all the tea I drank, was it all the sleep I got.  Who knows and who cares.  I feel so much better and so much more rested.
