The calender may say April 4, but the winds are howling and the snow is blowing.
I waited all winter for the snow and it never came. I gave up and hoped for rains for my poor parched gardens. The sun shone brightly all through March.
I worried more about my gardens this spring. I knew they weren’t getting the live giving moisture. In my mind I began to scale back the gardens in order to conserve water.
And then it came, the snow. Heavy wet snow. Twelve inches or more the last week week of March. And now more. Rain first, it was too warm to snow. But snow during the night. It’s as cold and windy as February this morning.
The seedlings are tucked away in their little greenhouses trying to stay warm, trying to find some sun shine. The ground is thirsty for the rain and the snow. You can almost see it turn green as the snow retreats. The day lilies and tulips are shivering close to the ground. But they both give hope with their bright green leaves.
Just when I had about given up hope Mother Nature sent the life giving snow and rain. She had not forgotten us. She was only reminding us that she works on her own schedule, not on ours. The calender may say April, but Mother Nature has turned back time to the middle of winter. If even for a single day.

What do the three names, green, garden and hedge all have in common? Give up? They are three names for the same kind of witch. The kind of witch that I am. I prefer garden witch myself.
So what is a garden witch? One that gets most of their magic from their gardens and the rest of nature. Some say we use our magic to help or gardens grow.
But is it magic, or just forgotten wisdom? Some of both I think. Garden witches use the wisdom passed down to them from past generations. We know the power of plants, roots and herbs to heal the mind, body and soul.
Most of the magic is being able to stay true to our knowledge. We know when to shut out the modern world and rely on what mother nature has provided all with, peace and beauty beyond imagination.

After a passing remark about my Witches Calendar last week I was asked why I had one. My response was because I’m a witch. Most people that have known me for a while realize this about me without having to be told. To the casual observer it’s something that might never be noticed.
My nose is not long with warts on the end. I don’t have a pointy black hat and a herd of cats following me. I usually keep most of my beliefs to myself and don’t share my rather unique knowledge openly.
Over time there are a few things that people begin to notice. I am passionate about protecting and preserving Mother Earth. I am an organic gardener, growing a lot of our food along with herbs and flowers. I am not a true vegetarian, but I prefer fresh and raw over preserved and cooked.
I don’t have a lot of trust in western medicine. For common alignments I relay on remedies passed down from my grandmothers. Herbs are the base of these remedies.
Do these thing alone make me a witch? Certainly not, it goes much deeper. But like I said, I don’t share to openly all at once. But I am not all that unique. There are probably other witches that have crossed your path.

The final part of my journey with Mother Nature was fitness. So here’s the question, what does Mother Nature have to do with fitness? Everything of course. She wants us to enjoy life and experience all of its wonders. It’s hard to do that if your out of shape.
At 45 I’m not big on high impact sports. I love to walk though. I walk around my neighborhood and admire my neighbors gardens. I also ride my bike. A bike with a basket is great to run errands with.
Gardening is an all purpose exercise. Bending squatting, lifting and digging. Gardening has it all. It’s about as a complete work out has you can get. And all of it done outside.
This time of year with snow and ice it’s hard to get outside for any type of exercise and I’m really not a gym type person. My solution is yoga. I discovered yoga in earnest last winter and love it. It keeps me in shape for the spring and helps me relax anytime.
I was never a big on exercise. I knew it was something I was supposed to do, but just didn’t get around to it most of the time. I’m glad I finally started.

Mother Nature is the primary care giver of all living life. She in the leaves of the trees and the blades of the grass. She is with each creature when it takes the first breath of life and there again with the last and those in between. She weeps when we humans pollute the air and the water knowing that we are destroying the things we need most to survive.
She is saddened by death, but knows that it is necessary for the cycle of life. She has provided all the plants we will ever need to make medicines and can not understand why we destroy them when we cut down the great forests.
You may say you don’t believe in Mother Nature, that it is the Christian God who does these things. But how many times have you cursed her? When the blizzard blows strong or the rain won’t come who do blame? Mother Nature. How can you blame something that you say doesn’t exist?
Mother Nature is not a witch or even Wiccian. She is not evil and something to be afraid of. Her earth was scared to many people before modern religions taught them to fear her. If God created man in his own image who is the model for woman? Why can it not be Mother Nature

God, Mother Nature, President of the Universe, take your pick which one you believe in. Which ever it is they must be laughing at us humans.
Why are they laughing, because we keep picking the dirtiest and most dangerous options for our energy needs. Natural gas and oil, coal, wind and solar. There are other options but these are the “big boys” of energy.
Some greater force buried natural gas, oil and coal deep in the earth. It is dangerous to get to them and more dangerous to work with them, not to mention dirty and well, oily.
Wind and solar energy are certainly above ground. They are both just out there waiting for someone to come along and put them to work. They are not to dangerous, we send out kids out to play in them. They are not dirty at all, we all love the smell of things warmed by the sun.
So yeah, some greater and all knowing force has got to be laughing us.

American Indians didn’t have a word or a phrase for land ownership because no one could own the land. They believed that all were responsible for the land and all the life that it supported but it was not something they owned. There is even an proverb that goes something like this, we don’t inherent the land from our ancestors you borrow it from our children. I believe in that saying. We need to treat our planet like a treasure that we wish to pass onto our children, and not like a large garbage dump.
I realize that we will not go back to the days when there was no land ownership in this country. That just isn’t practical. But if you own any land, be it a suburban lot or a large ranch, our way of thinking needs to change. We need to realize that the fertilizer that we dump on our lawns can get into the rivers and streams. We need to realize that the old tree we want to cut down for a better view is a home to birds and squirrels. We need to realize that every acre we pave over raises the temperature and means that much more imported food. We need to realize that while our names maybe on the deed, no one but Mother Nature truly owns the land. And Mother Nature will have the last word.

Blue skies and wind could make Colorado a lot of green. It seems like the State of Colorado is getting ready to become a world player in the alternative energy game. Some well know economists have said that in the next year or so some major green and alternative energy companies with be setting up not only wind mills and solar panels but also company headquarters here.
I certainly hope it happens. Anyone who has lived in Colorado for more than 30 days knows that we have a lot of sunshine and wind. We already have some large wind mill and solar panel “farms”, but there is certainly room for more. Yes we have mountains and snow, but we also have hundreds of miles of open prairie land that is just perfect for collecting the energy of Mother Nature.
